Bereznitsky Art Foundation and 3.6.9 Gallery and Store proudly present a new project - “VEILED PARADISE"
For the first time, the Bereznitsky Art Foundation is launching a collaboration with the young Kyiv-based gallery 3.6.9 Gallery and Store. This partnership will not be limited to exhibition activities alone. An important part of it will be the development of the city’s cultural scene, engaging young artists and creative communities in cultural and exhibition projects, as well as forging new links with art institutions actively working in Kyiv and other cities across Ukraine. The first joint project will be the exhibition «VEILED PARADISE» by Alina Kopytsia, a Ukrainian-Swiss artist who lives and works in Zurich.
Paradise is often imagined as a place where freedom can be found – a space in which restrictions, fears and the need to live up to others’ expectations begin to lose their hold. But what if such a paradise does not exist somewhere far away, but right here alongside us – hidden behind familiar social roles, rules of behaviour, and notions of the body, intimacy, family and «normality»?
In this exhibition, the artist creates precisely such a space. At first glance, her works captivate with their decorative quality: bright fabrics, floral patterns, lace, the softness of the materials and almost fairy-tale-like characters. However, behind this visual appeal lies a far more complex world – one filled with physicality, desire, motherhood, care, power, vulnerability and the quest for personal freedom.
Biography
Alina Kopytsia is a Ukrainian-Swiss artist who lives and works in Zurich. Her artistic practice encompasses textiles, collage, embroidery, silicone and ceramics, though her textile collages have become her most recognisable medium. At the heart of her work lie questions of gender identity, physicality, sexuality, parenthood, family, intimacy and the individual’s interaction with social norms.
Alina Kopytsia was nominated for the 2013 PinchukArtCentre Prize and the 2012 MUHi, and has taken part in international artist residencies in Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. Her works are held in the public collections of the City of Zurich and the Canton of Zurich, as well as by the municipality and region of Uppsala in Sweden.
Kopytsia’s solo and collaborative projects have taken place in Kyiv, Zurich, Geneva, Hamburg, Palermo, Berlin and other cities. Among her most recent exhibitions are:
